Erie

Hawthorne and Millers Crossing are in the country Erie. It is not a proper nation, more like how Italy was broken up during the middle ages and Renaissance with a bunch of small principalities everywhere. Erie and its neighbors are all pseudo-democratic and have no actual royalty (in truth, however, they are hereditary oligarchies, and respect is due the "ruling families").

The terrain is rolling hills covered with deciduous and evergreen forests. The most notable transportation artery is the River Running, though there are also some roads.

As for racial demographics… people where in Erie and the surrounding area vary in skin tone from pasty white to brown. There are very few dark black people, but there are plenty of people with mixed ancestry resulting in "Halle Berry" skin tones. It's about quarter-white, half-tan, quarter-brown. In Millers Crossing one wouldn't see anything more exotic. Merchants in Hawthorne, however, sometimes see a truly black person or an Oriental person.
